Here I am… Again with my coffee body lotion. I love this lotion so much that I think I will never stop making it. The last few times I’ve used cocoa butter with it, and it’s even better that my “only coffee” lotions.
I can’t say I didn’t like my last creation – oatmeal cocoa butter honey milk body lotion. I just didn’t like it as much as my coffee lotion, and it was more time-consuming to make it.
This one is super easy and fast to make, and it smells heavenly!
Over a double bath melt together:
1/2 cup emulsifying wax (IT CAN NOT BE SUBSTITUTED WITH BEES WAX)
1/2 cup cocoa butter
1/2 cup oil (this time I used only olive oil)
(do not allow the mixture to boil)
brew some coffee
1 1/2 cup for the lotion and
1 cup to enjoy it yourself
When the oil-wax-cocoa butter mixture is melted mix it in a glass jar with 1 1/2 cup of hot coffee. Both liquids need to be hot.
Use a blender to do that if you don’t want to spent the next hour stirring the mixture every 5 minutes. It will cool down and thicken much faster but you will have more to clean. I always mix the lotion in the same jar in which I store it. It’s very convenient for me.
If you choose the way I make it (without blender) you need to stir it every few minutes because the coffee is separating from the rest of the mixture on the bottom of the jar…
…and it looks just like on the picture below:
When the mixture is almost cold you can add essential oils (or fragrance oils). For more coffee smell and caffeine properties you can add coffee essential oil. In my case I added about 15 drops of sweet orange, 15 drops of grapefruit essential oils and 10 drops amber rose fragrance oil (for more sweet smell).
in my lotions I never forget to add some vitamin E. Poke it with a sharp knife and squeeze the liquid out. Use as many as you wish.
Stir it well with a spoon and enjoy:
For those who don’t like coffee or coffee smell or just don’t want to use coffee (for another reason): you can brew 1 1/2 cups of green, mint, peppermint tea or just use plain hot water. In my previous lotions I’ve used fresh squeezed grapefruit juice. It worked great, too.
You can get creative and mix different liquids but do not use more than 1 1/2 cup of that mixture all together. The lotion won’t get creamy and thick enough. I’ve done that before 🙁
ah… and keep in the fridge!
* since I started making and using lotions with cocoa butter in them I noticed my stretching marks got smaller and almost invisible!!!

mmm. That looks fantastic! I love home made lotions! My daughter has pretty good eczema and allergies and the only thing I have found that keeps it quiet is something really expesive called “Milk Bath”. I have never thought of making it myself, but this is inspiring!

gorgeous photos, as well.
happy weekend!
plus! great blog you have!!
Love this recipe! 🙂
Can you use beeswax instead of the emulsifying wax?
so from what I know, beeswax is not the same as emylsifying wax and it doesn’t work the same in lotions. If you want to use beeswax instead you will have to use borax as well. I don’t know the ratio, though. You will have to google it and find out.
yummy–sounds wonderful.

I used illipe butter instead of coco…. Works awesome! Thanks for the recipe!
Thank you for sharing!
I just made it, and
…it’s fantastic!!
that is really great! I’m happy it was a success and you like it. I personally LOVE LOVE LOVE this lotion. I think it’s my all time favorite!
I have been experimenting with lotions for over a year now…and nothing! I mean, nothing!! works on my dry skin. I just made the coffee cream lotion and am totally in love! I have the driest skin ever and my rough, chapped hands already feel better. I used the following:
1/2 cup butters (4 tbs cocoa butter, 2 tbs coconut oil and 2 tbs shea butter
1/2 cup oil (1/4 cup almond and 1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 cup beeswax and 1 tbs of borax.
4 capsules Vit E (small, 100 mg)
I am so in love. Only complaint, I am not real big on the scent (even though I adore the smell of coffee)…and unfortunately I don’t have any good essential oils at this very moment. Oh well…still in love with it!
Oops…I forgot to add the coffee to my above ingredient list
1 1/2 cups coffee!
Your recipe sounds great!!!
Maybe instead of coffee use green tea next time. It’s almost scent less (I tried it before) or use a flavoured coffee. The first time I made it I used hazelnut vanilla coffee and it smelled wonderful. I always add some grapefruit and orange essential oils as they give it citrusy scent but still… you can smell the coffee.
I believe someone else posted a recipe very similar somewhere….I thought I was doing this recipe but I wasn’t….now I’m trying to rescue it. It’s almost creamy….but not enough and it has separated a little. Kinda looks almost curdled :-(. I must rescue it as it’s the last of my almond oil! I did re-heat and use a stabilising wax and some more emulsifying wax so hopefully I can re-heat again and add a little beeswax and all will be well. Sigh – so many recipes so little time.
adding beeswax won’t help you at all as it does need a borax to work the same way as e. wax.
I made this lotion MANY times and it never separated or curdled. are you sure you used e. wax???
this is the main mistake people do. they substitute e. wax with beeswax which is not the same!
all are very good receipy but i want to preservative this cream please advice about this, how and what is that preservative ?
I keep it in the fridge. It last for about three months if kept in the fridge. If not the shelf life is pretty short.

I feel like eating it rightaway 😛
This is amazing! Have made it twice now and it is the best lotion ever, better than any I have ever purchased in the stores. Very rich and creamy. I put it in canning jars and re-purposed my used canning lids and pumps from prior bottles of lotion. It is fantastic, and easy. Use organic coffee and the rest of the supplies I get online from Mountain Rose Herbs. Thank you for sharing!!
I am so very happy to read you comment! It is a wonderful lotion, indeed. And you’re totally right… way better than any you can get at the store… and I shall add… way cheaper and way healthier!
thank you for coming back and sharing your experience!
I make body butters as well but don’t like how oily some of them are. Is this one very oily?
I would not say, it is oily, but I don’t know how oily is too oily for you 🙂
Thank you for this amazing lotion recipe! My skin looks so smooth and feels that way, too! I made a few adjustments. I added a tablespoon of cocoa powder to the coffee before brewing to give it more of a chocolate smell. I also only added 1/2 cup of the coffee/chocolate mix instead of the whole 1 1/2 cups of coffee. It smells like a chocolate heaven and I am still getting all the benefits of the coffee and chocolate! I am in love!!!!
I should add that the other 1 cup was water!
Danica, the cocoa powder and the chocolate smell sounds amazing… maybe I’ll try it next time I make this lotion. Thank you for sharing your experience!!!
Made this today…super simple for a first-time lotion maker. ‘To die for’ smell and feel!! Love this!
wonderful!!! thank you for your feedback!
I just did this using beeswax and was so disappointed when it started to curdle and separate. Just before it cooled I added about a tbls of borax and stirred quickly and it turned out perfect! Thanks so much for this recipe!
will the water mixture separate? I make my own lotion and every time i use liquid (water) be it from distilled to rose water it always seems to separate from the oils and butters!!!! even when I refrigerated it still develops water on top, at the bottom, and even in the middle and it was mixed (with a blender) very well, what am i doing wrong?
Stephanie, no, it will not separate if you use e. was as in the recipe above. e. wax is an emusifier that prevents from seprarating. Some people use borax + beeswax insted (those two must be used together in place of e. wax).
Just a head’s up – it looks like someone lifted your article/recipe and posted it on their site without credit: http://recycledawblog.blogspot.com/2013/01/make-your-own-cocoa-butter-coffee-body.html
thank you so much for letting me know!!!
Do u have to use any type of wax? Because im eleven i want to make this for my mum but on any recipe i go on theres always so many complecated ingredients this is the only recipe i ve found that hass only one difficult ingredient.
And when i say any type of wax i mean do u have to use wax
Can I substitute beeswax for emulsifying wax?
No. Please read comments above for explanation. Some people asked this question, as well.

Hi! I know this post is pretty old but I am in love and want to try this lotion…. I’ve read through all the comments before asking a question that you have already answered several times… “=” I know this is a natural easy diy….. Can preservatives be added to the mix? I’m not good at remembering to put stuff in the refrigerator.
Thanks a bunch!
citric acid is a natural preservative, as well as coconut oil, but with the coconut oil the consistency might change so I would stick to the citric acid.
Thanks a bunch beautiful! I’m a follower now.. I look forward to enjoying your post..
I love the idea behind this lotion…coffee is my favourite everything lol but I’ve attempted this recipe twice now and it never seems to thicken. I thought maybe the first time I had measured the coffee wrong and added too much…but the second time I made it, I was sure to follow everything to a Tee….any ideas as to what I’m doing wrong?
Before the question is asked, I have used the emulsifying wax both times and I used an Organic Almond OIl as the oil in it, the last time I even shaved the cocoa butter to make sure i was getting the exact 1/2cup.
Any help would be nice, appreciate it!!
I Have made this twice now. With and without Cocoa butter and I love it both ways. Recipe is easy and lots of lotion for not much cost. Thank you so very much for sharing. 🌼
I really would like to make this but I am wondering how greasy this is? I like my lotion to quickly absorb into my skin. Can anyone that had made it give me a heads up? Also, I read that if u add water to lotion it can cause bacteria and mold to grow….any problems with that?
I normally use it only at night because it’s not really that good in absorbing into the skin very quickly.
