Homemade Oatmeal Cocoa Butter Honey Milk Lotion

I got up today and felt like I want to make some granola for snacking later. I started gathering all the ingredients together on the kitchen counter and when I looked at the oatmeal I remembered that I have never posted pictures and recipe for my oatmeal cocoa butter honey milk lotion.

I’m almost out so I couldn’t taka any decent picture with the lotion inside the jar. It lasted for about 3 weeks and there is about one week more left in the jar. You have to know that I use it a few times a day just because I made too much and I don’t want it to go to waste.

With milk and raw honey and nothing to preserve it (not counting keeping it the fridge and a bit of the lemon juice) I know that my lotion wouldn’t be good after 2 months. It is how it works with homemade lotions.

Next time I’m going to use just half of the amount of the ingredients so I don’t have to worry about it going bad.

I love how simple it is to make and how safe it is even for my kiddo who likes to try (means eat) my lotions from time to time.

I don’t mean she eats it like a regular food 😉

Every time she sees me putting it on she wants me to put it on her, too. Of course whenever I put it on her she licks a little bit of it. At least I feel comfortable with her doing so. I wouldn’t if that was a commercially bought lotion.

Now if you interested in the recipe.

Things You’ll Need:

  • 2 tbsp. oatmeal
  • 2 tbsp. citric acid (I used fresh lemon juice)
  • 1 tbsp. honey
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/3 cup almond or hazelnut oil or coconut or olive oil (or mix of few of those)
  • 1 oz. cocoa butter
  • 1 oz. emulsifying wax (CAN NOT BE SUBSTITUTED WITH BEES WAX)
  1. Soak the oatmeal in 1/2 cup of water overnight. Blend in the food processor until smooth.

  2. Heat the milk in a pot. Do not boil. Remove from stove and transfer it to a glass jar.

  3. In different pot, over medium low temperature melt the cocoa butter, wax and honey (over double bath) with the choice of your oil until fully dissolved, stirring continuously. Do not let the mixture reach a boil.

  4. Pour the melted oil mixture slowly into the glass jar with milk and water, stirring constantly until the two mixtures are combined. Add the citric acid. Add blended oatmeal. Stir vigorously with sterilized spoon. The mixture will become more creamy while cooling down. It will take about an hour. Don’t forget to stir the mixture every 5 to 10 minutes with the spoon until completely cold.

  5. Store it in the refrigerator.

If you want when the mixture cools down you can add vitamin E and your choice of essential oils.

Enjoy!

One more think:

all the homemade lotions don’t have strong preserving and anti-bacterial ingredients, so it is very important to avoid the bacteria getting inside the jar where you keep your lotion. I NEVER touch it with my hands/fingers. I always use a clean plastic spoon (which I re-use washing them in dish washer after each use) to scoop out the needed amount of lotion.

Keeping it in a cool, dark place as well stretches the shelf life – I keep mine in the fridge.

An awsome recipe! I personally prefer oil when I’m dry but I might try this for my boys and husband who prefer lotion! Now i have to figure out what scent won’t send my darling, man’s man, bear of a husband running for the hills.

Thank you for this. Did you give us the already halved amounts, or should we halve them? Also, does using the wax make cleaning the blender a pain, or is it easier than bees wax to clean?

I gave you the full amount. So if you want to make half you need to use only half of each ingredient. And I have never used a blender to make this lotion, but from my experience I’ve never had a problem with cleaning the cup I use for melting the wax so I think you shouldn’t have any problmes with cleaning the blender.

I’m so very glad I was hungry for Banana Bread and stumbled on a link to your site. I have spent a good part of my early morning viewing your photos from your 365 self portrait project and find them all so amazing and creative. I have a 15 year old daughter who has recently developed a passion for photography so she’s constantly taking self portraits and photographing nature and her new little sister Sophia. Tomorrow I will be sharing your site with her to further inspire her.
Thank you soo very much for what you’ve done and keep up the beautiful work.

Neecy, thank you so much for such a great comment. I am so happy when somebody says I inspire them. I doesn’t happen very often so when it happens I blush (like when I read your comment). Thanks to people like you I want to continue creating and I want to be better. Thank you! I hope your daughter will like my pictures as well and if she have some questions about photography she can ask me! I’ll be happy to help her as much as I can!
      Regards.

      thank you!
as for INKA you can get it online from Amazon or in your local european deli (eastern european). if they don’t have it you can always ask them to get it for you. sometimes they do that. if you can’t get that just use a regular coffee or decaf – it works great too!

Honestly, I have no idea if you can use those granules. If you have beeswax you probably should just get a borax and use that instead of lithium. beeswax needs to be together with borax in lotions. It won’t work with anything else (it won’t thicken the lotion).

I would say “no”. the e. wax here is to make the oil to mix with water (and milk). without it you will have separate layers of oil and the rest of the liquids.

you don’t have to. citric acid is normally added for anti-bacterial qualities. it helps to preserve the shelf life although you might add lemon juice instead. it’s not the same but it works. I normally don’t add citric acid as it’s really hard to find in my local stores. so I use lemon juice. many times I don’t use it at all and keep all my homemade cosmetics in the fridge. that way they last very long.
and every single time I apply it on my skin I use a clean spoon to take the needed amount of the lotion out of the jar. I never touch it with my bare skin to prevent the bacteria to get inside. this is another way to stretch the shelf life of the lotion.

Sorry, and can you use instant oatmeal? Or should it be “regular” kind? Sorry for so many questions. I’m very new to lotion making. I’ve made two so far. The first one wasn’t so great, it started seperating after a week. But I mistakenly used beeswax instead of Emu. Wax. I just bad the 2nd one, so far so good. Though it is a little greasy. But it seems to dry in fairly well, so it’s not so bad.

Thanks for your quick response! The one I just made, I used a mix of oils, I added a little bit of shea butter with water and Emu wax. Does that sound okay? So far it isn’t seperating and it doesn’t feel icky or anything, but it isn’t even a day old yet.

It was about a cup of water
about 3/4 cup oil- Coconut Oil, Almond and jojoba
        1 tbs shea butter
and about 1/4 C Emusiflying Wax. I plan on keeping it in the fridge, or at least in my bedroom which is pretty cold.

coconut oil is wonderful for lotions!!! I just made a body butter using coconut oil, cocoa butter, coffee and vit. E. just those 4 ingredients. I am loving it!!!
you lotion sounds good. If it separates I would guess it’s because you used not enough e. wax. but I am not a specialist.

I read somewhere that if it separates you can pour it back to a blender and blend for a few seconds and put it back in a jar. It suppose to work.

Thanks! I’ll see how it does, hopefully it’s fine. I didn’t want to add to much because of the shea butter and coconut oil, which will put get more solid in cooler temps. Is Shea butter equal to cocoa butter? Or is one more superior? I only have Shea.

I want to make mine, just with Shea butter, coconut oil, olive oil and honey. I’m a bit scared of adding honey because I do not have the fridge option where I’m based and I want a batch to last like 2-3 months. I also don’t wanna add water and milk and other stuffs. How safe am I with adding honey, considering the fact that I want it to last a while (my reason for making the ingredients butter and oil)

Hi Ruth. So I make another skin lotion that is based on almond oil. The additional things are coconut oil, shea butter, liquid lanolin, jojoba oil, and some essential oils. I never add anything food related to this mixture, as it stands in a glass jar in my bathroom. i had never had any problems with it going bad. I think you should omit the honey, but you can add it to a separate glass right before applying on the skin. Just take a few spoons of your main mixture and mix them with the honey right before applying the lotion on you body. that would resolve the problem.
