Homemade coffee body lotion

coffee cocoa butter lotion

I’ve made this body lotion for a few times now, and it’s always great.

When I made it for the first time I added too much (for my taste) essential oils. The second time I didn’t add anything at all and I actually didn’t like it so much, as well. without the essential oils, this lotion smells like mocha coffee. It’s actually a very pleasant scent, but I like it to have a delicate citrus scent to it as well.

So this time, I think, I’ve found the perfect recipe for me.

So, this is how I made it:

1) 1/2 cup of emulsifying wax

2) 1/2 cup of almond oil

You can use whatever oil you’ve got. The better the quality of the oil, the better the quality of your body lotion.

For example:

coconut oil – very moisturizing and great for irritated and sensitive skin.

sunflower oil – is loaded with Vitamins A, D, and E. great for damaged and aged skin.

for more oils and their descriptions go here.

But you really don’t have to focus on that. Olive oil or sunflower oil will work just fine!

3) Over double bath melt the wax in oil. DO NOT MICROWAVE IT!!!

4) When the wax and olive oil are mixed well together so there isn’t any piece of wax floating on the oil pour it into a glass jar or glass bowl or whatever jar (it should be glass) you want to use for this purpose ( I use a jar after TOSTITOS salsa).

5)  add 1 1/2 cup of hot coffee. I made mine strong!

*According to Esthetician Jennifer Tanner from CancerLynx.com, when coffee is applied topically it redistributes fat cells and helps to prevent cellulite from forming. She goes on to say that it helps to get rid of varicose veins by shrinking and tightening your blood vessels.

6) Stir it well. Very well.

7) Don’t let the coffee separate from the rest of the mixture. If you see something like the picture below stir it again. Stir it very well. And after 2, 3 minutes stir it again, and again… and again… Until the mixture is thick. If you forget to do that and you let the mixture separate don’t worry… You can heat it up a little, and start the process of stirring the mixture every couple of minutes again 🙂

8) Sometime in the middle of the stirring process, when the mixture is not hot anymore add (or not) essential oils, or fragrance oils, or both. This is what I used today. 15 drops of grapefruit essential oil and 5 of amber rose fragrance oil.

The difference between them is that the fragrance oil is mostly for the scent, while special oils have therapeutic properties (and they smell nice, too). Before deciding what kind of essential oil you want to use for your lotion, you have to check it out if it’s safe. Not all of them are safe to use on the skin. So, just google it.

For example, grapefruit essential oil helps to boost digestion, benefits the immune system by helping to clear the lymphatic system, helps with skin problems, and can be used for muscle stiffness, water retention and for bolstering the nervous system.

BUT

it can irritate the skin if exposed to strong sunlight after treatment.

9) At the same time open a few capsules of vitamin E and pour the liquid into your body lotion.

10) Ready to use!!!

or to play with 🙂

* This lotion is not a miraculous protection from cellulite!!! If you don’t drink enough water every day if you don’t exercise and eat a healthy diet this lotion won’t make your cellulite disappear or it won’t prevent the cellulite from appearing. As a woman who already had one child and is expecting another one in the near future, I do have to admit I have cellulite and this lotion didn’t make it disappear. My cellulite hasn’t gotten any bigger since I started to use this lotion, though (and I’ve used it for about a year). If you want to fight cellulite you should try to use this lotion with coffee body scrubs and body wraps using coffee grounds and olive oil.

For an even better recipe check out my post: Cocoa Butter Coffee Body Lotion. That lotion helped me to fight stretch marks thanks to the cocoa butter in it.

Happy mixing and using! I hope you’ll all enjoy it!

    Thank you for stopping by…
and Martha… this lotions is the easiest thing to do even with a kid and all the chores around the house… and even if you are working mom at the same time. If you are a coffee drinker just make two extra cups of coffee, mixing wax and oil takes about 5 minutes. Stiring the coffee-oil-wax mixture until it thicken migh take you about half an hour but in the mean time you can do whatever you have to do…
and the restul… IS WORTH IT!!!
    hugs,

I have forgotten to say that if you want you can add a few (or more than a few) drops of vitamine E (you can buy it in every drug store) to this lotion… it’s very good for your skin!!!

great recipe! i have a question though. does the caffeine lose its effectiveness over time? i know that if you leave coffee out for over an hour or so it loses its flavors and whatnot, but does the strength of the caffeine lessen as well? thanks!

No. You can’t use only beeswax. It doesn’t work the same way as e. wax. To achieve the same results (and I don’t know that from experience just from what I read) you need to use borax with beeswax. I do not know the ratio how much borax you need for a certain amount of beeswax. You would have to find it out. try to google it.

I love the recipe, thanks! I went to Pinterest specifically looking for this, and found yours. When I lived in France, all of the pharmacies sold a dozen different brands of cellulite-fighting lotions, and the ones with caffeine are considered to be the most efficient. As for the beeswax: I make all of my diy creams with it. The stirring part just needs to be a little more intense at the end as it thickens. Thanks again; and congrats on the incredible photography! I will share a link to your post on my blog.

wow!!! I made this lotion yesterday, for the first time, and I love it! I have been making lotion for a few years now, trying different recipes that I find on line or in books, but this one is my absolute favorite! I used hazelnut coffee (no E.O.) and it smells yummy, I can’t stop smelling it. LOL Thanks for the recipe. I can’t wait to try the recipe with grapefruit juice in it.

    Hi there,
I was wondering if there is something I can substitute for Emulsifying Wax? I already have beeswax and shea butter and was hoping I could use one of them. Thanks! Joanne

nop, you can’t use beeswax in place of e.wax.
they do not have the same properties therefore beeswax won’t help the lotion to get creamy. the water and the oil will not combine and they will stay separated.
if you want to use beeswax then you must use it with borax. those two together have similar properties to e.wax. but beeswax itself won’t work.

If you are using water in the formulation, why no preservative? Bacteria, yeast and other nasties will grow without a preservative. The Vitamin E is a great antioxidant which will extend the shelf life of your carrier oils, but it isn’t a preservative.

I was wondering if I don’t use any fragrance oils and use hazelnut coffee, will the lotion have a strong coffee fragrance?

Are you sure, you used all the ingredients as it’s listed?
I have been making this lotion for years and it’s always nice and creamy. I have friends who made it and it never fails.

It sounds like you might have missed the emulsifying wax or didn’t use enough.

I have made a body “lotion” using tea, and no matter how much I mixed, and mixed and mixed…I could not get the water to completely unite with the other ingredients. I even used my ninja and still nothing. I ended up having to drain what liquid was left over. So, how do I make that not be the case with this recipe? Is it b/c the coffee is thicker? What do you use to blend the ingredients?

Have you used the emulsifying wax ? not the beeswax!!! Sometimes people use beeswax in place of the emulsifying wax, and it doesn’t work. The purpose of the emulsifying wax is to make the water/tea/coffee unite with the oil. Also, while combining, all the liquids should be pretty warm (on the hot side).

Thank you, after I had written my comment, I reviewed some of the other comments and found the one about the beeswax, so I did a search on the differences, and that was why it didn’t mix. I will need to get some emusifying wax for my creams then. thx!!!

When I combine 2 parts (oil mixed and coffee mixed) both should be hot right? And can I use tea instead coffee in same ratio?

Well, I can’t really give you any other advice for substituting because I have never substituted the wax for anything else. The emulsifying wax is very easy to get online.

This lotion sounds awesome but you MUST use a preservative – despite keeping it in the fridge. Its just not worth the risk of bacteria growth.
